Does anyone know of similar research done with Americans?

Great question -- one that I would definitely like to know the answer to, as well as the difference between how students use online and hard copy texts. If someone is interested in conducting such a study, please contact me. This fall, many of my students purchased the hard copy of my OER text. Last spring, only a few students purchased the hard copy. At the end of the term, it would be interesting to find out how the students "read" the material.
