College Open Textbooks Community

Driving Awareness, Adoptions, and Affordability

The open books are usually quite interesting, still may be less convincing than the printed text ?

The open books are  often  "student-friendly"  with wonderful  illustrations and do have so many plus points,  but   psychologically  the  print of the text on paper  is more convincing, even though it may be equally  incorrect or misplaced (depending on the author).  Do you agree ?...the  effective  steps to change this  notion ?

As a fellow digitial immigrant, I agree. But our students are digital natives and this might not be their opinion. However, I simply have my college bookstore have the book printed and shrink-wrapped at their printshop. My students pay about $13 for a 700-page book which serves not only as their textbook, but their laboratory and homework assignments. While they have the option to simpy read it online, the vast majority want a printed copy. I leave it in three ring binder format so they only have to carry around the chapter(s) we are currently covering - not the whole book!
Hi Erik,

Your efforts are great. Congrats for this concern for students ! you rightly said the vast majority wants a printed copy...this meets their eye at their convenience and is also in tune with their frozen psyche.

What subject do you teach Erik?

Hi Sherry,

I teach physics and astronomy.  Welcome to the OER Community!

Thank you! I am looking for an open source Biology book to adopt in the Fall semester. There don't seem to be too many complete ones.  I'll keep looking.

It's a pleasure meeting you.

Sherry
