How have you used open textbooks?
I stopped using a required textbook in my Business Skills class when I realized the price was hurting enrollment. Instead, I created my own content, recommended two books, and directed the class to useful web sites. This is, at best, awkward and confusing. Later I dropped a Spanish class because the textbook is $175. I am delighted to be directing CCOTP and CCCOER because they address these problems.

The Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) has been nominated for the 2010 Bellwether Award in the Instructional Programs & Services category. The awards are for proven programs to narrow the achievement gap.

In my conversation with Phillip Morris, Community College Futures Assembly Program Director and Alumni Fellow, Educational Administration and Policy, College of Education, University of Florida, I learned that sustainability and transferability are high on… Continue

Beta testers of open textbook reviews needed

In the past few months, more than 30 open textbooks have been peer-reviewed by an outstanding group of professors, instructors, and other experts. Most of these reviewers exceeded our requirement that a reviewer have taught the subject for a minimum of one year at the college level. Many have taught for decades and several have doctorates and full professorships. The reviewers rated every chapter in each book on our 11 criteria and wrote summaries. Some even improved the open textbooks and most… Continue

PBS Teachers website provides a wealth of resources for community college instructors

The site provides resources, professional development opportunities, and a discussion forum. An exciting new feature called Activity Packs can be posted to your page on a social… Continue

Hi Jackie,
Thanks for the welcome. I actually think I'm registered here under two different email addresses, but I can't remember what the other email address was : )

Jacky,

It was a very hectic 6 months creating the textbook, but it’s great to be an author. The next stage is getting feedback and improving the textbook. I chatted with Judy and see that you were copied on the email (dtd 3 June) about having my textbook reviewed. Would you please let me know the status of that item.

We are better organizing our efforts at Houston Community College and Lorah Gough will continue to be the CCCOER institution representative. I have recently accepted the one year appointment as the OER Coordinator, a part-time release faculty position to help champion the OER/OCW cause. I will be applying for a $100,000 grant at HCC that will be titled: OpenCourseWare Textbook Project. The purpose of the grant will be to create new or organize existing OER/OCW materials into electronic textbooks (we plan on using Connexions) that can be adopted for course use at HCC thus reducing student textbook costs. Our intentions would be to have completed textbooks be part of the CCOTP. A few questions for you:

1. Does the CCOTP pay an honorarium for those who review textbooks? If yes, how much? If no, would you solicit reviews if HCC paid the honorarium? How much do you think an honorarium should be?
2. We will want to concentrate on textbooks that add to the collection. In addition to what you already have on the CCOTP web site, do you know of any other textbooks that are currently being built? If yes, titles and the course that they are designed for would be useful.

I am looking forward to meeting you in person. Maybe at the 2010 Connexions Conference.

Hi Jacky... I am getting more into this area now that I am on PDL and have more freedom with my time. Just getting my feet wet at this point but it appears to be an exciting time to join this revolution. Brian
