Academia and the MOOC

The "Academia and the MOOC" course that I am facilitating on the Canvas Network started this week. It is a 4 week course but very open-ended and you can still register and easily work through the content since the discussion if the key element.

It is not a "massive" MOOC (there will be less than 1000 participants) and it isn't a "course" (in that it has no assignments or grades) but is it gathering people in academia around the topics of how MOOCs are impacting education and might do…

MOOCs and Academia

I will be teaching  "MOOCs and Academia" for Canvas Network https://www.canvas.net/ in mid-April. It is less a "course" and more of a forum with some content provided as background and discussion organized by roles such as teacher, designer, tech support, college administrator etc.  The purpose is to get people in different roles in education (including students) thinking about how MOOCs will impact their institutions in positive and negative ways.  It…

MOOCs

Is anyone participating in a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) or creating one?   I have been posting about them this year at http://www.serendipity35.net/index.php?/categories/43-MOOC and I am considering creating one this fall for next spring. These courses - often with many thousands of participants - seem to be the right place for open textbook use whether they are free or low cost. Check out my posts for more…See More

Why Pay for Intro Textbooks?

2//7/12 from INSIDE HIGHER EDIf ramen noodle sales spike at the start of every semester, here’s one possible reason: textbooks can cost as much as a class itself; materials for an introductory physics course can easily top $300.Cost-conscious students can of course save money with used or online books and recoup some of their cash come buyback time. Still, it’s a steep price for most 18-year-olds.But soon, introductory physics texts will have a new competitor, developed at Rice University. A…See More

Criteria for selecting an open textbook - What is your top choice?

As an extension of a discussion we are having online in the P2PU course about criteria for selecting an open textbook, I have a list on my website made up of items suggested by faculty.I added a poll just now to select the "top" criterion. I'm sure the poll will not get a large response in the next few weeks, but perhaps members here will respond to it and send the link to colleagues and we can get a sense of perceived importance. List and poll link…See More
