Culture of Sharing in Education Needs Encouragement

Academic technologist, Javier Atenas, points out that the culture of sharing in education is still in its early stages.  Without encouragement to produce and reuse open educational resources, many academics do not naturally share.   Some potential barriers may be the perceived loss of control with sharing the results of many hours of hard work and secondarily there may be a worry that other academics will criticize their educational materials.  Showing academics the OER repositories to search… Continue

Una,

I could have sworn I signed up over a year ago when I did the peer review, but you didn't have my email address listed, so I signed up again.  Missed you at the meeting this morning.

Hi Una - Thanks for the welcome. I am looking for open source texts for my communication classes.  I teach in Ohio - our college is in Washington County and we are a state college hence the name Washington State Community College - but most people do mistake us for being in the state of Washington.

Hi Una,

My book is called "A Gentle Introduction to the Art of Mathematics," and it is
hosted at SCSU -- http://www.southernct.edu/~fields/GIAM/

I'd love it if it could be added to the College Open Textbooks list! It is licensed
under the GFDL.

The title may be slightly misleading. It is intended to be a "gentle introduction" to
the upper-division courses in the math major at a four-year school. (This is where
students often get derailed -- they are switching from courses that concentrate on
calculation to ones that mostly involve mathematical proof. I would guess that some
community colleges would have such a "transitions" course, but I looked at San Mateo's
website and they don't seem to have one. Although one never knows, perhaps they
would be interested in adding such a course to their curriculum. They do have several
courses beyond the calculus, and a "transition" or "foundations" course is often placed
between the calculus and courses like their Math 268 - "Discrete Mathematics"

Best wishes,
Joe

Hi Una,
I do indeed work with Rebecca Hedreen! I have recently finished an open math text and was seeking her advice about marketing when she recommended this site to me. Rebecca is a tremendous asset to our University!
