Florida's Orange Grove Text Plus Grows Its Shelf of Open Textbooks

Through the innovative partnership between Florida Distance Learning and the University of Florida Press, a growing number of open access textbooks are being created and reused in the classroom.  Last spring, the first in a series of three open calculus textbooks were tested in the classroom with 1600 students in Florida.  It is now available for anyone to download and the second and third textbooks will be available in spring 2012.

Florida's Orange Grove Repository posts Open Textbook video on You Tube

In response to the high cost of college textbooks, Florida's statewide Orange Grove Repository established a unique partnership with the University Press of Florida in 2009 to form Orange Grove Texts Plus (OGT+). Through OGT+, all students have access to their instructional materials in the format that they choose and on the device that they select.  Watch the video ...…

Project Gutenberg Founder and "Open" eBook Inventor Passes Away

 

Michael S. Hart invented the e-Book in 1971 when he typed in the text of the Declaration of Independence in a computer lab at the University of Illinois where he was a student.   For the next 40 years, Hart dedicated his life to the digitization and distribution of historical documents and literature in the process founding Project Gutenberg.   He passed away this last week at the age of 64.

 

Today Project Gutenberg, houses over 36,000 items in 60 languages.  The goal…
