Joe Moxley, Quentin Vieregge, Karen Langbehn, and Katelin Kaiser of the University of South Florida present for the Open Courseware Consortium and CCCOER (Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources) about WC (Writing Commons), an open textbook community.

CONNEXIONS- TRANSITIONING FROM THE EDGE OF EDUCATION TO THE MAINSTREAM Connexions - cnx.org - is presented by Joel Thierstein, Associate Provost of Rice University and Connexions Director. Connexions is a place to view and share educational material made of small knowledge chunks called modules that can be organized as courses, books, reports, etc.

Continuous Improvement in Teaching and Learning: The Community College Open Initiative Presented Friday, June 18th, 2010 at the CETC & CUE Online Teaching Conference. Candace Thille, Director of the Open Learning Initiative (OLI), describes some of the results of OLI practices. OLI students showed greater learning gains and completed courses sooner than traditional students. OLI students had a 99% completion rate vs. 41% for traditional students. Thille describes OLI goals for community colleges and progress to date.

OPEN TEXTBOOKS PUT YOU IN CHARGE Jacky Hood, Director of College Open Textbooks, describes the instructor's dilemma of selecting a textbook that doesn't fit exactly, costs a lot, and wonders what's fair to use and what's illegal. An open textbook is open-licensed, often modifiable by the instructor, and costs very little for students (usually free for computers with Internet access). She provides resources for instructors interested in exploring 

open textbooks.

OPENGEO FOR EDUCATORS- SETTING A PLACE AT THE TABLE FOR OPEN SOURCE GIS The Geospatial Revolution, Geospatial education, obstacles and challenges when teaching GIS, and a live software demonstration of GIS software are presented.

James Glapa-Grossklag, Dean of Educational Technology, Learning Resources, and Distance Learning at the College of the Canyons, and John Makevich, Director of Distance and Accelerated Learning, present for the Online Teaching Conference 2011. Open Education is gaining traction, and promises to provide savings to learners. Playlists provide potential for "educational mixes." Challenges to open textbook adoption and usage are also discussed.

OTC12 - OPEN COURSEWARE DEVELOPMENT- HEALTH ED CASE STUDY OpenCourseware holds much promise as a way to bust open classroom doors (and course sites), foster knowledge sharing, and nurture collaboration. Such efforts are not without major challenges, however. Hear a blow-by-blow account of what it took to develop an open and online health education course that uses no textbook. Participants will be invited to participate in crowdsourcing 

improvements to the health ed course. Debate the merits of teaching with open courseware and no textbook.

A decade ago, MIT OpenCourseware ignited an open education revolution sharing lectures and course syllabi online and thousands of colleges and universities worldwide joined. Fast-forward to 2011, 160,000enroll in an open Artificial Intelligence course at Stanford with online exams, interactive discussions, and completion certificates. A new model of open online education with credentialing for a modest fee is emerging. The Undersecretary of Education recommends these alternative ways to credential students so employers can accurately evaluate job skills. Community colleges are in a unique position to provide this credentialing as they embrace the open education model. Explore options to "open" your classroom practices to improve student learning and enhance your teaching.

OTC12 - SO MUCH OPEN COURSEWARE, SO LITTLE TIME New repositories of open courseware and open courses are sprouting faster than spring flowers. These websites promise inexpensive open-licensed lessons, assignments, assessments, projects, videos and more. This session categorizes these offerings by academic discipline, academic level, accreditation, business model, completeness, licensing, formats and other criteria. Einstein University, National Repository of Online Courses/Hippocampus, Nixty, OER University, Open CourseWare Consortium, Open University, OpenStax College, Peer-to-Peer University, Saylor Foundation, UNU OpenCourseWare, and others are included in 

the comparison.

A REVOLUTION IN LEARNING: CCCOER How the Community College Consortium for Open Education Resources is revolutionizing learning. James Glapa-Grossklag describes the history of OER, from MIT Open Courseware to CCCOER and TAACCCT grants. What are OER, examples of OER, who's engaged in OER, how they are helping revolutionize learning.

Textbooks, describes the benefits of open source, the properties of open
textbooks, examples of organizations and sources of open educational resources, open licensing options, authoring opportunities and practices, and repositories of OER materials.

THE STITZ-ZEAGER OPEN ACCESS PRECALCULUS PROJECT Carl Stitz of Lakeland Community College and Jeff Zeager of Lorain County Community College discuss an "open source" college algebra textbook and a later precalculus text they created. The materials are being used at University of Wisconsin, Suffolk University, and several other institutions.
